The Daily Californian

Established in 1871, University of California Berkeley’s student run periodical is one of the oldest newspapers on the West Coast and the country. The Daily Cal’s stories transcend campus boundaries, reaching students and alumni all over the country and world.

One year ago, the independently run newspaper was fielding offers from smartphone app publishers. After weeks of deliberation, the Daily Cal chose GENWI because of our unique approach to app construction. They loved the option of changing the app on the fly and fully committed to building an iPhone app with us.

Apple Inc. recognized the app’s potential and partnered with Cal students in a joint sponsorship app promotion. Apple gave away 10 iPod touches in a random drawing of individuals who downloaded and utilized the app. From there the app use skyrocketed stimulating hundreds of downloads and the number is growing everyday.

With their success, the Daily Cal called on GENWI again to add a new feature. The students wanted to show their app users exactly who is reading Cal news. Utilizing Google maps, we helped create the “I read it here” feature that allows the app users to see who is reading and where they are at any given moment.

The App features include:

  • Visually pleasing news story list interface
  • Live updating news feeds with vivid pictures
  • Specific news category organization
  • Search capabilities in all content (titles, articles, tags, URLs, comments etc.)
  • Interactive photo blog
  • The Buzz blog of recent events and trends
  • Shout outs or comments in the app community
  • Ability to "bump n' share" the app

Cal students maintain their website with an RSS feed, thus the application is updated with fresh-off-the-press news Monday through Friday during the school year and twice a week during the summer. Their newspaper reaches the Generation Wireless. Will yours?
